Customer rules

Rules decide what customers can change from their account. Go to Rules to see each one and what it's set to. Cancellation has its own page.

How rules work

  • Each rule has an on/off switch. You can set a rule up while it's off and turn it on when it's ready.
  • Changes only apply once you choose Save. Each save is kept as a new version.
  • Most rules have a Cut-off before billing: the number of days before an order when customers can no longer make that change. It opens again after the order is charged.
  • Rules only limit customers. You can always make any change yourself from a subscription's page.

Customers can always change item quantities (up to 99 of an item) and move their next order date (from tomorrow up to a year away). These aren't controlled by a rule.

Swap rules

Lets customers change what they get without changing their subscription or billing date.

  • Let customers change the variant of a product they already get: a different size, flavour or colour of the same product, at that variant's price. No setup needed.
  • Swap groups: sets of products that can stand in for each other, such as all your coffees. A customer with any product in a group can swap it for any other. Add exceptions to leave products out.
  • Price limits on a group: how much cheaper or more expensive the new product can be, compared with what the customer pays now. Set "Cheaper by at most" to 0 to stop downgrades. Leave a field empty for no limit.

Limits and safeguards

  • Swaps allowed per cycle, or empty for unlimited.
  • Cut-off before billing.
  • Only offer products that are in stock, so a renewal doesn't fail on inventory weeks later.
  • Only offer products that keep the subscription discount, so nothing renews at full price.
  • Do not allow swapping while a failed payment is being retried.
  • Keep the line's quantity. Turn it off to let customers change quantity in the same step.
  • Swapping back to the original does not count against the limit, so customers can undo a swap they regret.

Add to subscription rules

Lets customers add products to an existing subscription.

  • On every delivery: priced on the subscription plan for the customer's billing frequency, with its discount. A product without that plan can't be added this way.
  • On the next delivery only: at full price, then removed after the order that bills it. Any product can be added this way.

Turn on one or both. Then choose what can be added: Products I choose, or Any active product in the store, with exceptions in either case.

Limits and safeguards

  • Adds allowed per cycle. An add counts once, however many it puts on, and one the customer removes again in the same window doesn't count.
  • Most of one item an add.
  • Cut-off before billing, which can be different from the swap cut-off.
  • Only offer products that are in stock. Turn this off if you sell on backorder.
  • Do not allow adding while a failed payment is being retried.

While adding is open, customers can also remove items from their subscription. Turning adding off stops new adds and removals. Items already on a subscription stay.

Pausing

Adds a Pause subscription button to the customer's subscription page. While it's paused nothing is sent or charged, and the customer can resume it whenever they like. It isn't offered while a failed payment is being retried, or on a subscription that's set to end.

This is separate from cancellation. A pause offer in the cancellation flow works whether this is on or not.

Delivery address

Lets customers change where their subscription is delivered. The delivery rate is re-quoted for the new address.

  • Allow the country to change: on, customers can move to any country you ship to. Off, they can correct their address but not leave its country.
  • Cut-off before billing, so a change can't land after the label is printed.
  • Do not allow changes while a failed payment is being retried, since a new address can change the delivery rate and tax.

Delivery frequency

Adds a Change frequency option. Customers choose from the frequencies your plans offer for every item on their subscription, and each item moves onto that plan, with its discount. The next order stays on the same day. The new frequency applies after it.

It isn't offered on a paused subscription, one that's set to end, one with a failed payment being retried, one with a cancellation discount running, or one that's paid for several deliveries at once.

Discount codes

Adds an Apply a code field to the customer's subscription page. Choose which codes they can apply:

  • Only discounts made in this app, or
  • Any code that applies to subscriptions, including ones made in Shopify. Check your Shopify codes first: a welcome code meant for first orders would also take money off for any subscriber who applies it.

A code a customer applies works like one you add. They can remove codes they applied themselves, but not codes from checkout or from you. Codes that aren't for them, are used up or have ended are all refused with the same message, and a customer can try at most 10 codes that don't work in an hour.
