Shopify admin setup
Most of Vanix is set up in the Vanix admin, but a few things live in your Shopify admin. This page covers each of them.
Before you start
- A payment provider that supports subscriptions. Subscriptions charge a saved payment method on each renewal, so your store needs a provider that supports that, such as Shopify Payments. Shopify only shows subscription options at checkout when it does.
- Customer accounts. In Settings → Customer accounts, make sure your store uses customer accounts, not legacy customer accounts. The Subscriptions page only works in customer accounts.
Add the subscribe option to product pages
The Subscription Selector block puts a one-time or subscribe choice on your product page, with the delivery frequencies from that product's plan.
In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes and choose Customize on your theme.
Open a product page template from the menu at the top of the editor.
In the product information section, choose Add block, then under Apps choose Subscription Selector.
Drag it to where you want it, usually just above the add-to-cart button, and choose Save.
The block only shows on products that have a subscription plan, so it's safe to add to a template that's shared with products you don't sell on subscription.
Block settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Heading | Text above the options. Leave it blank to hide it. |
| Subscription label | The name of the subscribe option. Defaults to "Subscribe & Save". |
| Add the discount to the subscription label | Adds the selected plan's saving to the label, for example "Subscribe & Save 25%". |
| One-time label | The name of the one-time option. Defaults to "One-Time Purchase". |
| Show the subscription first | Puts the subscribe option above the one-time option. |
| Select the subscription by default | Starts the page with the subscribe option selected. |
| Frequency label | Text above the delivery frequencies. Leave it blank to hide it. |
| Highlight label and Highlight applies to | A tag such as "Most Popular" on one of the frequencies. Leave the label blank to hide it. |
| Show the benefits list | Shows up to three reasons to subscribe under the options, each with a short line of detail. |
| Colours | Accent, selected background, subscription price, and the background of the expanded panel. On a dark theme, change the panel background to match your page, or its text will be hard to read. |
Add the Subscriptions page to customer accounts
Vanix adds a Subscriptions page to your customer accounts. Customers need a link to reach it.
In Shopify admin, go to Content → Menus and open your customer account menu.
Choose Add menu item, and pick the Vanix Subscriptions page as the link.
Name it something customers will recognise, like "Subscriptions", and save the menu.
If you add the page from Shopify's checkout and accounts editor instead, Shopify offers to add the menu link for you.
Shipping zones
When customers can change their delivery address, Vanix only offers the countries in your shipping zones in Settings → Shipping and delivery. If you have a Rest of World zone, a customer could choose any country, so narrow your zones if that isn't what you want. Delivery rates for subscriptions also come from these settings.
Discount codes made in Shopify
Codes you make in Discounts in Shopify admin appear in Vanix automatically. For a code to work on subscriptions, set it to apply to subscriptions in Shopify. In Vanix, a code that isn't shows "Not set to apply to subscriptions".
- Keep editing these codes in Shopify. Vanix keeps its copy in step.
- Usage counts checkout orders and subscription renewals together, so a code's usage limit holds across both. When a code is used up, Vanix switches it off in Shopify.
- A code edited in Shopify doesn't change subscriptions that already have it.
Discounts you make in Vanix work at checkout too, but edit those in Vanix. Discounts
Customer segments
You can limit a Vanix discount to specific customer segments. Segments are made in Shopify admin under Customers → Segments.
The payment method update email
When a customer asks to update their payment method, or you send them a link from Vanix, the email they get is Shopify's own, sent from your store. It uses the branding and template in Shopify's notification settings.
